Start with the thinking
A polished screen cannot rescue a weak learning decision. Find the useful action first.
About
I’m James Flaskamp. I’ve worked from the classroom, the coaching table, behind the camera, and inside the design process. The common thread is simple: help people understand something clearly and do something useful with it.
Good learning experiences need sound instructional thinking and great communication. My background happens to sit right at that intersection.
I spent approximately 20 years in K–12 education, including time as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, and digital learning coach. I know what it is like to have a smart idea, a full calendar, three tools that almost do the job, and no appetite for a solution that takes six months to build.
My graduate work in instructional design and educational technology gave me the learning science and design framework. My background in broadcast journalism, storytelling, video production, and presentation design taught me how much clarity, pacing, tone, and visual communication matter.
Put those together and you get the way I work now: start with the learning goal, understand the people and the constraints, then design the clearest and most engaging experience that makes sense.
Sometimes that is an interactive scenario. Sometimes it is a better workshop. Sometimes it is cutting half the content and giving people one excellent decision to make. The technology is never the point. The experience is.
How I think about the work
A polished screen cannot rescue a weak learning decision. Find the useful action first.
Time, attention, tools, confidence, and context are design inputs, not inconveniences.
The work can be sophisticated without making the experience hard to understand or use.
